Leafs fans drew attention for what they did after Canadiens' third goal in season opener

The Toronto Maple Leafs opened their 2026-27 season with a loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night, and some of the crowd at Scotiabank Arena did not stick around to see how it ended.

Several fans headed for the exits after Alexandre Carrier made it 3-1 in the third period, with about seven minutes still left on the clock.

Montreal went on to win 3-2.

Carrier beat Sergei Bobrovsky over the glove at 13:12 of the third, which gave the Canadiens a two-goal cushion.

Then Toronto scored again at 15:46 to make it a one-goal game, so the people who left missed a real push at the end.

Social media had plenty to say about it.

One X user mocked Leafs supporters and asked why anyone would walk out with the score still 3-1, and you can see the post below.

Montreal outlets piled on too. One argued that Bell Centre fans would almost certainly have stayed to the final horn, and that leaving early sent an odd signal to players still trying to claw back.

There was plenty to watch. William Nylander scored both Toronto goals, the first just 48 seconds in and the second with 4:14 left in regulation.

Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick in the 2026 draft, made his NHL debut and played 15:19, finishing minus-2 with one shot on goal.

Jim Hiller also lost his first game as Leafs head coach, and Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots in his Toronto debut.

Josh Anderson and Zachary Bolduc also scored for the Canadiens, and Jakub Dobes made 25 saves.

It's only one game out of 82, but the walkouts are what people keep bringing up.
