Insider David Pagnotta has shared that Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Joel Edmundson intends to test free agency this offseason, potentially leaving Toronto.

During the 2023-24 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded for veteran defenseman Joel Edmundson with the hopes of adding a more physical presence to their blue line and a veteran presence to their locker room.

After a disappointing first-round defeat to the Boston Bruins, Edmundson, and the Leafs set their sights on free agency, which Edmundson plans on testing to see which team offers him the best contract for him and his family.

NHL insider David Pagnotta reports the following:

"The Leafs have also expressed interest in re-signing Joel Edmundson, however I'm told the rugged defenceman plans on testing free agency next month. He is open to returning to Toronto, but he wants to explore his options before deciding his future." - David Pagnotta

Edmundson spent last season split between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals where he was solid in a depth role. He is likely to look for a long-term contract this coming offseason and if the Leafs are not comfortable with offering him one, then he will likely walk for nothing.
