Auston Matthews is quietly bucking a growing trend around the NHL

Auston Matthews just keeps showing up.

While three members of Team USA's gold medal Olympic roster have either left or are begging to leave their Canadian teams, the Maple Leafs captain remains firmly planted in the biggest market in hockey.

Connor Hellebuyck made his trade request public this week, telling the Winnipeg Jets through his agent that moving on is the best path for him and his family.

Hellebuyck backstopped the Americans to Olympic gold in Milan back in February, and now he wants out of the only NHL city he's ever known.

He's not alone.

Quinn Hughes was already dealt to the Minnesota Wild before the Olympics even started, ending his run as Vancouver's captain.

Brady Tkachuk followed him out the door months later, traded from Ottawa to the Florida Panthers.

Both wore the red white and blue in Milan.

Both wanted nothing to do with staying north of the border afterward.

Dylan Larkin has been trying to force his way out of Detroit since June, when his agent called Red Wings management asking for a trade.

Larkin gave the club a short list of preferred destinations, but months later he's still waiting on a front office that hasn't found the right deal.

Compare all of that to Matthews, who just wrapped a strong showing at Arizona State practice sessions ahead of camp after offseason knee surgery.

The 28 year old has two years left on his deal and, by all accounts, wants to keep being the guy in Toronto.

It's a strange NHL landscape right now.

Stars who won it all together in February are scrambling to leave the markets that raised them, and two of the four wanted specifically away from Canadian franchises.

Matthews, an American himself, has had every reason to look elsewhere.

He hasn't.

For a fan base burned by star departures before, watching their captain stay put while the hockey world implodes around him might be the most reassuring thing to happen in Toronto all summer.
