Blues prospect Matthew Mayich remains hospitalized in critical condition days after collapsing during a military-style ASU workout, per a family source.
Matthew Mayich, the Arizona State defenseman and St. Louis Blues draft pick, remains in the hospital and in critical condition as of Thursday night, according to a person close to his family.
The 21-year-old collapsed last Thursday during an outdoor team workout that multiple sources have described as military-style, and he's been fighting for his recovery ever since.
The Sun Devils were reportedly going through a leadership and team-building exercise near ASU's track and field facility when Mayich went down.
Tempe Fire Medical Rescue rushed to the scene and transported him to a Phoenix-area hospital, where he's remained for nearly a week now.
Arizona was baking under an extreme heat warning at the time, with temperatures climbing well past 100 degrees, and reports have pointed to a possible cardiac event tied to the conditions.
What we know about the workout
ASU hasn't clarified whether the session was officially sanctioned by the hockey program or if an outside group was running it.
What has emerged is that the workout stretched close to 50 minutes with breaks built in for water and talks on leadership, but it still ended with a Sun Devil fighting for his life in intensive care.
The Blues, who took Mayich in the sixth round back in 2023, released a statement saying the organization is keeping him close to their hearts and praying for his comfort and recovery.
He never signed an entry-level deal with St. Louis, choosing instead to keep developing in college, first at Clarkson and now at Arizona State after transferring this offseason.
Support pouring in from the hockey community
Mayich, a Stoney Creek, Ontario native, spent four seasons with the Ottawa 67's before a strong freshman year at Clarkson, where he put up seven goals and 15 points in 34 games last season.
Prayer services have already been organized back home, and the hockey world is watching closely as ASU continues investigating exactly what went wrong that morning.
Praying for Matthew Mayich and his family right now.
