This evening, the New Jersey Devils have fired GM Tom Fitzgerald and a favorite to replace him has already emerged.
The New Jersey Devils have had a disappointing season by all metrics and are going to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs despite having plenty of talent.
With the disappointing season about to come to an end, the New Jersey Devils have decided to place the blame on General Manager Tom Fitzgerald as he has been relieved of his duties.
New Jersey Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer announced today that Tom Fitzgerald will depart the organization.
Shortly following the announcement, former Toronto Maple Leafs President of Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan has been named as a favorite to be Fitzgerald’s replacement.
Brendan Shanahan emerges as frontrunner to become New Jersey Devils General Manager
In a discussion just before Fitzgerald was fired, NHL analyst Arthur Staple suggested Shanahan as a perfect replacement if Fitzgerald was in fact fired.
To me there’s a guy sitting right there who can come in and who’s a Devils legend who has run teams and front offices and it’s Brendan Shanahan.
Shanahan has been mentioned already as a potential fit for the Nashville Predators and now becomes the favorite to land the Devils job.
Beyond his time with the Maple Leafs building a contender, Shanahan has a deep history with the Devils organization playing 5 seasons of his NHL career in New Jersey.
While the Devils are extremely early in their hiring process, look for Shanahan to be a name that continues to be linked with New Jersey until they ultimately make a decision.
