Patrik Laine landed in Montreal this summer, and now he's admitted that for eight years before arriving, he hated one player that's now become a favourite teammate.
The Patrik Laine trade in the off-season has become a major win for the Montreal Canadiens, as the team landed an elite level finisher while also bringing in an experienced character to their locker room.
However, there was one factor that the front office didn't account for and likely didn't know about, and that was Laine's hatred for Brendan Gallagher, which he revealed in his latest interview.
I hated him for about eight years before I got here. I always hated him on the ice; I had never met him outside of it, so...

He's one of those players with heart and soul, and every time he steps on the ice, you know what you're going to get from him. Now I don't hate him anymore; now I'm a huge, huge fan of him!

This is likely something that happens very often in the NHL given the physical nature of the sport and what the rivalries produce, and while Laine was never a direct rival of Montreal and Gallagher, he just didn't like him.
Things have changed in a hurry however, and after playing alongside him, Laine has grown to appreciate the heart and soul that the veteran plays with, as his opinion has rapidly changed.
it's not often that a player will be as open as Laine was, but there's no doubting that this being smoothed over was huge for the chemistry in this Canadiens locker room, and with Laine and their young core rolling, this is a team that has very high potential for 2024/25 and beyond.
