Sportsnet reporter Eric Engels revealed recently that he believes the Montreal Canadiens will will make a trade at the NHL draft this summer.

The Canadiens currently hold the 5th overall pick as their first selection in the 2024 NHL entry draft. Notably, this is the same spot where the team picked defenseman David Reinbacher last year. However, it sounds like team may be open to moving that pick, be it to move up or down in the draft.

That being said, it is not clear whether the team is looking to trade up, or trade down. The team has been linked to Russian forward Ivan Demidov and has been rumored to be interested in trading down if he is not available at 5. Interestingly, teams were reportedly looking to trade for Montreal's 5th overall pick last year as well, as other teams around the league really wanted David Reinbacher. This also comes from Eric Engels.

I know that many teams were interested in the fifth pick that the Canadiens held last year. In fact, a number of teams wanted to acquire that pick to select David Reinbacher.

This also includes the team [Philadelphia Flyers] - from what I could gather and speaking with several sources in the league afterward - which ended up choosing Matvei Michkov, was one of the teams that were really interested in getting David Reinbacher.

It is shaping up to be a fascinating draft once again this year. Be sure to tune in to see what the Canadiens do with their 5th overall pick.
