Future of Edmonton Oilers goaltender takes another turn after initial concerning report

The worry started when insider Daniel Staples flagged a report suggesting the Oilers' top young goalie prospect could be headed back to Sweden instead of continuing his development in North America.

That kind of news would sting for Edmonton, given how much promise Jonsson has shown since signing his three year entry level deal back in April.

Jonsson spent last season lighting it up in the Hockey Allsvenskan with BIK Karlskoga, putting together a save percentage and goals against average that earned him league goalie of the year honors.

He then moved to North America and got his feet wet with the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL.

The problem is the Oilers have a serious logjam in net right now between their AHL and NHL depth charts, and there was real concern that a crowded crease situation might push Jonsson to look elsewhere for reps, possibly back home in Sweden where he'd get top level competition without the wait.

Just as fans started to accept losing him for a year, Oilers insider Bob Stauffer stepped in with a much different message.

Stauffer says all signs point to Jonsson attending Edmonton's rookie camp in September, and beyond that, he's expected to play in North America this season.

That's a big shift from where things looked just days earlier, and it suggests whatever hesitation existed has been worked out between the player and the organization.

For a franchise counting on Jonsson as a long term answer in net, keeping him developing on this side of the Atlantic matters.

Fans will get their first real look at where he stands when rookie camp opens.
