The Edmonton Oilers are not giving up on Bruce Cassidy. They may just be building a one-year detour to get him.

Elliotte Friedman revealed on the 32 Thoughts podcast that he is picking up signals Edmonton may no longer wait for Cassidy, whose contract with the Vegas Golden Knights runs through June 30, 2027.
That date is the detail that reframes this entire story.
"I thought that they were going to wait for Cassidy, I'm starting to get some signal that maybe they won't."

Every coaching search update has treated this as Edmonton pivoting away from its top target.
Friedman himself floated a different possibility that has gone largely unexamined - a one-year coaching hire designed to hold the seat until Cassidy hits the open market next summer.
Stan Bowman has already interviewed Craig Berube and Peter Laviolette, according to reporting from Jason Gregor and Friedman on Sportsnet.
David Pagnotta reported the Oilers are prepared to offer Cassidy a five-year deal at a premium salary whenever they get the chance to speak with him.

The calendar changes the calculation

Vegas has refused to grant interview permission while still paying Cassidy's salary.
The NHL has confirmed that permission rests entirely with the Golden Knights as long as they continue to pay.
That creates a narrow path. If Edmonton hires a coach on a short-term arrangement, they preserve the ability to pursue Cassidy as an unrestricted option next July.
The Oilers finished 41-30-11 with a plus-13 goal differential, which means this roster does not need a full rebuild behind the bench.
It needs structure and a voice that holds the room for one postseason.

A calculated gamble on the McDavid timeline

Friedman specifically asked during the podcast whether a coach would take a one-year shot at leading Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
The answer from his co-host was immediate - any coach would.
That is the leverage Bowman holds. Edmonton can offer a short-term coach the most attractive one-year audition in hockey while keeping Cassidy as the long-term play.
The risk is real, but the logic lines up with a front office that knows exactly who it wants and is simply waiting for the contract calendar to cooperate.
