The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly acquired Sebastian Cossa from the Detroit Red Wings in a deal centered around a second-round pick.

Multiple sources reported the deal, with an official announcement expected within 24 hours.
BillyStefnhl broke the news first, reporting the package is built around a second-round selection with additional picks or prospects possibly involved.
Top Tier Hockey followed with confirmation that the deal has been finalized.
What makes this fascinating is the history behind it. The Oilers targeted Cossa in the 2021 NHL Draft before Detroit moved up and selected him 15th overall.
Five years later, Stan Bowman has found a way to land the goalie Edmonton originally wanted.

Detroit's pipeline logjam made Cossa expendable

This trade happened because of what unfolded inside Detroit's organization, not just Edmonton's need.
Frank Seravalli reported on Oilers Now that the Red Wings may have over-seasoned Cossa in the AHL while younger goaltending prospects climbed past him internally.
Trey Augustine, Michal Postava, and Carter Gylander occupy space in Detroit's pipeline now.
Cossa spent 123 AHL games proving himself, earned two All-Star selections, and posted a .911 save percentage across 41 outings last season for Grand Rapids.
Despite that, the path to a starting role in Detroit kept getting longer.

A prospect bet, not a quick fix

Fans expecting Cossa to solve the crease overnight need to temper those expectations.
He has exactly one NHL game on his resume.
The Oilers rolled three goalies last season and trusted none of them in the spring, with Tristan Jarry posting an .882 save percentage on a $5.375 million cap hit.
Cossa's real value is his contract flexibility and his ceiling. As a restricted free agent with minimal NHL service time, his next deal will carry a manageable cap hit during Connor McDavid's prime years.
Edmonton is betting on development over desperation, a rare show of patience from this front office.
Whether Cossa becomes the long-term answer or simply the first piece of a larger puzzle depends on what Bowman does next.
