Edmonton Oilers organization's goalie reportedly leaving North America after strong season

The Edmonton Oilers' goaltending prospect pool looked a lot deeper a few weeks ago.

Now, according to a report making the rounds on X, that pool may be about to lose one of its most promising names.

Samuel Jonsson, the towering Swedish netminder who has spent the past year turning heads with the Fort Wayne Komets, has reportedly told fans around the rink that he plans to head back home to Sweden for next season.

If that ends up being the case, it would mark a surprising turn for a goalie who looked like one of the better stories in the Oilers system this year.

Jonsson was a fifth round pick back in 2022, and after grinding his way up through Swedish hockey, he finally made the jump to North America this past season.

He did not just survive the transition, he thrived in it, putting together a strong regular season and an even better playoff run with Fort Wayne.

Losing Jonsson to Sweden would leave a real gap.

Edmonton has been counting on him as a long term answer in net, someone who could eventually push for a role behind the big club after more seasoning in the minors.

If he walks away from North America now, it forces the organization to lean harder on its other young goalies to fill that void in the crease department.

That is where names like Day and Vinni come into focus.

If Jonsson is indeed done in North America, the expectation right now is that the ECHL crease in Fort Wayne would fall to that duo next season, giving the Oilers a fresh look in a spot that already has plenty of turnover.

Nothing here is official yet, and plans can always change between now and training camp.

But if a promising 22 year old goalie really is walking away from his NHL opportunity to play at home in Sweden, it is a storyline Oilers fans will want to keep an eye on all summer long.
