Darnell Nurse has reportedly rejected a trade to division rival

It's about a clock most coverage has ignored entirely.

Frank Seravalli told Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now that the Sharks have made a play for the Edmonton Oilers defenseman, but San Jose sits firmly on Nurse's "no" list.

Nurse, with four years and roughly 9.25 million dollars annually remaining on his current deal, won't waive the clause to get there.

That part is everywhere.

What's missing is the timing mechanism underneath it.

Seravalli noted Nurse's full no-movement protection ends this summer.

After that, Edmonton gains far more freedom to send him wherever it chooses next year, with or without his sign-off.

Nurse seemingly understands this, which is why Seravalli suggested the player may have already mentally moved on from Edmonton.

San Jose's approach now reads less like a genuine pursuit and more like positioning before that leverage shifts permanently in the Oilers' favor.

GM Mike Grier knows Nurse currently holds the cards, but he also knows that window closes fast.

Making a play now, even a rejected one, keeps San Jose in Edmonton's peripheral vision for when Nurse's options narrow.

Boston, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh remain his approved destinations, yet none have made aggressive moves, per Seravalli.

If that inactivity continues into a season where Nurse no longer controls his own destination, San Jose's early interest could age into the only real offer on the table.
