Connor McDavid reportedly interested in joining Metropolitan Division team

Todd Fedoruk floated Connor McDavid to Philadelphia.
The quote making the rounds dropped the one condition that changes what it actually means.
Fedoruk is a former Flyers winger and a 97.5 The Fanatic radio voice, not a Tier-1 insider like Elliotte Friedman or Pierre LeBrun.
His full line carried a trigger the viral clip cut off: "if he doesn't have a good start to the season."
That missing clause is the entire story.
"He is going to be a player who will be calling teams. His agent is going to be looking for him to go places. There are rumors that Philadelphia is a place that Connor McDavid wants to go."

McDavid signed a two-year, $12.5 million extension last October that kicks in for 2026-27 and expires in the summer of 2028.
He deliberately took a short term below Leon Draisaitl's $14 million, and that choice is now doing something he may not have intended.
McDavid was not in decline last season. He won the 2025-26 Art Ross with 138 points while the Oilers stumbled to a 93-point, first-round exit.
A short deal turns every slump into a rumor
An eight-year contract absorbs a bad October quietly. A two-year deal with a 2028 exit ramp turns the same cold streak into a referendum.
Fedoruk did not report that McDavid wants out of Edmonton.
He described a mechanism where a slow start invites the phone calls, and the contract makes those calls plausible.
Philadelphia is simply first in line because Daniel Briere and Rick Tocchet still need a genuine No. 1 center to build around Matvei Michkov.
What this sets up for the next two years
Any path runs through a trade, since McDavid cannot reach free agency until 2028, and Stan Bowman has shown no sign of moving his captain.
The real takeaway serves every fanbase, not just Philadelphia's: McDavid built a two-season window where any dip in his play will manufacture chatter on its own.
Expect this exact rumor, with different cities attached, to resurface every time the Oilers lose three straight.
