'An Even Higher AAV?': Connor McDavid's Next Oilers Deal Could Shatter Expectations

Per a new report from analyst David Pagnotta, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid could sign a shorter term deal but with a higher AAV (average annual value).
Edmonton Oilers superstar captain Connor McDavid has the chance to become a UFA next July 1, but the Oilers would love nothing more than to make sure that he never has a chance to hit the open market.
He's been rumored to be open to taking a shorter term deal rather than a similar 8 year extension to the one he signed in 2017, and per a new report from analyst David Pagnotta, a shorter term deal could even result in a higher AAV (average annual value).
David Pagnotta: Re McDavid extension: "It would surprise no one if his deal hovered around the $17 million AAV mark on a mid-term deal, but does a shorter term result in an even higher AAV? Those discussions start soon." - The Fourth Period (9/2)
Why McDavid's Contract Talks Could Redefine the NHL Salary Ceiling
Whenever
McDavid's new contract is eventually signed, it will possibly be for the highest AAV in NHL history, which could have lasting effects on contracts down the road.
Not only will the game's best players be able to use McDavid's deal as a comparison, but with the NHL salary cap expected to rise, fans may need to get used to their favourite players demanding more salary.
Short-Term Gamble: How a Higher AAV Impacts Edmonton's Cup Window
The Oilers will always have a chance to go on a playoff run as long as they have players like McDavid, along with his star teammate
Leon Draisaitl, on the ice.
But there's no denying that, combined with
Evan Bouchard's new hefty $10.5 million AAV, the Oilers could have a massive percentage of their salary cap committed to just 3 players, giving them less money overall to sign depth pieces.
