Red Wings reveal steep asking price for Simon Edvinsson

The Detroit Red Wings are not interested in a draft pick haul for Simon Edvinsson. According to Jeff Marek, if the restricted free agent defenseman is moved, Detroit will demand established NHL help in return.
Marek put it bluntly:
If you have to deal him...they're looking for players, they don't want picks and prospects.
That stance fits a franchise stuck in a decade-long playoff drought. Detroit has used a dozen first-round picks over that stretch, and the message from this report is that interim general manager Shawn Horcoff wants help that can play right now, not three years from now.
A Standoff With a Ticking Clock
Edvinsson, 23, was the sixth overall pick in 2021 and has grown into a top-four defender, with 16 goals and 56 points in 150 games while averaging more than 21 minutes per night.
Elliotte Friedman reported that he prefers a trade over an extension, yet Detroit has told rival clubs that signing him remains the top priority.
Pierre LeBrun reported that at least ten teams have inquired about his availability. Horcoff has full authority from ownership to get a contract done and has offered short, mid and long-term options, but a sizeable gap in salary remains. If no agreement or sign-and-trade arrives by December 1, Edvinsson cannot play this season.
Who Can Meet the Price?
Philadelphia, Seattle, Nashville, Boston, Utah and Montreal have all been linked in some form. The demand for players rather than futures could narrow that field, since clubs with deep prospect pools and picks but thin NHL rosters would have to give up regular contributors to land him.
Detroit still owns his rights and does not have to move him. That leverage may allow Horcoff to hold firm on the price.
Still, the longer the stalemate drags on, the more pressure builds on the Red Wings to find common ground or accept a market that will not bend.
With the December 1 deadline looming, Detroit's next move on Edvinsson could shape the franchise's direction for years to come.
