Tonight, a new report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has suggested that another former Red Wings player could replace Stev Yzerman as the next GM.
The Detroit Red Wings currently hold the longest active Stanley Cup Playoff drought in the NHL.
After another disappointing season just barely missing the playoffs due to a late season collapse GM Steve Yzerman made the decision to step down.
Now, the Red Wings have begun their search for a new General Manager and to this point contending names have not leaked.
However, today that has changed as Elliotte Friedman has suggested that former Red Wings player Brendan Shanahan could come in to replace Yzerman.
Detroit Red Wings linked to Brendan Shanahan for open General Manager position
According to Friedman, one candidate he expects to have major interest in becoming the Red Wings GM is Brendan Shanahan.
Elliotte Friedman: Re Red Wings management search: I gotta think that Brendan Shanahan would have a ton of interest in this job - Sportsnet Central (7/15)
Shanahan spent 9 seasons with the Red Wings serving as an assistant captain during much of his tenure before retirement.
Since retiring, Shanahan moved to a front office career which has been headlined by his role as Team President of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2014 to 2025.
If the Red Wings ownership are looking for a familiar face to get the culture back on track then Shanahan makes a ton of sense.
However, after the failed Yzerman experiment they may want a fresh face without a previous connection to Detroit.
