Dylan Larkin heard exactly how Detroit feels about his trade request on Friday night. When the former captain was introduced with the scratches before the Red Wings' home opener, the crowd at Little Caesars Arena booed loudly enough that the team cranked up music to cover it.

Detroit then lost 2-0 to the Rangers, and the noise only sharpened the focus on a standoff that shows no sign of ending.
The boos are loud, but the Red Wings' approach has been quiet and consistent.
According to David Pagnotta, Detroit "won't take a futures only package," even though the club could have moved Larkin multiple times already if it were willing to go that route.
In other words, the lack of a deal is not about a lack of suitors. It is about the price tag Detroit has set.

Detroit Wants Help Now, Not Picks

That stance reveals the philosophy behind every call. The Red Wings have missed the playoffs ten straight years, and a package of prospects and draft picks does nothing to change that this season.
Larkin is still a top-line center, so Detroit wants players who can step into the lineup immediately.
Minnesota, the team most often linked to him, pursued Larkin this summer without finding common ground, which suggests the gap is about fit and value rather than interest.

Patience Over Panic

Interim GM Shawn Horcoff holds the pen after Steve Yzerman stepped aside, and a caretaker has little reason to accept a discount under public pressure.
Larkin is also on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, which limits his market value until he is healthy. Booing from the stands does not change that math.
The risk for Detroit is obvious. The longer this drags on, the more the team plays without a captain and with a cloud hanging over the room.
Still, the Red Wings appear willing to absorb the noise rather than settle for futures.
A team that meets their demand for immediate help can get a deal done. Until then, expect more awkward nights at Little Caesars Arena.
