Cameron Hughes is on waivers with the Dallas Stars, and the veteran forward is expected to head to the AHL if no team puts in a claim.
The Dallas Stars have placed forward Cameron Hughes on waivers, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
The move came Thursday, which means any of the league's other 31 teams can now put in a claim on the 30-year-old.
Hughes opened the regular season on the injured non-roster list with an upper body issue.
Landing on waivers suggests he's healthy enough to play again, and if nobody grabs him, he's expected to report to the Texas Stars in the AHL.
A long road for a depth forward
Hughes is an Edmonton native who played at Wisconsin before turning pro.
He got into two games with Boston back in 2020-21, then built his résumé in the minors, where he now has more than 450 AHL games under his belt.
Dallas brought him back on a two-year, two-way contract in June 2025.
That deal runs through this season, so he's headed toward unrestricted free agency next summer.
Last year he finally got another look in the NHL, appearing in three games with the Stars after a late March recall and scoring one goal.
What happens next
The waiver process doesn't take long, so the answer should come quickly.
A claim would be a bit of a surprise, but teams dealing with injuries up front sometimes take a flier on a veteran who can fill a depth spot.
The more likely outcome is that he lands in Texas, where he's been a productive player.
Hughes put up 23 goals and 57 points in 69 regular-season games with the Texas Stars in 2024-25.
For now, it's a waiting game, and Dallas fans will find out soon enough where he ends up.
Depth moves like this rarely make headlines, but they often shape how a roster looks a few weeks into the season.
