Joe Sakic is one of the most intriguing players in NHL history, and now the league has announced a documentary surrounding a key storyline of his career.
In a career that spanned over two-decades, Joe Sakic accomplished all there is to do in an NHL career, winning two Stanley Cup's, a Hart Trophy, a Conn Smythe and becoming a legend in Colorado, following the teams move from Quebec. However, it may not have been that way, as the New York Rangers signed him to an offer sheet in 1997, with a contract clause that stipulated they would pay $15 million of his contract as a signing bonus.
This stipulation applied to the Rangers and the Avalanche if they were to match the offer, setting in motion a one week timeframe for Colorado to match the deal. What ensued was pure drama, with the team finding the money in the most unlikeliest places; Hollywood.
Now, the NHL have announced a documentary to air on Amazon Prime, debuting on April 16th surrounding that event, aptly titled: Saving Sakic.
'Saving Sakic' original hockey documentary premieres April 16 on Prime Video in Canada.
For those that know the story, this will be an interesting look back at the struggle to retain one of the NHL's greatest ever players, and for those unaware, this will be a ridiculous story, every bit as entertaining as it is crazy.
Either way, this should be a must-watch for all fans as Amazon continue looking to make hockey content following their documentary on the Toronto Maple Leafs before they delve into the behind the scenes of the lives of some NHL stars in an upcoming documentary.
