Mike Ditka, the Bears coaching legend and Hall of Fame tight end, died at 86 on Friday, and Chicago's hockey community is mourning along with the rest of the city.

Mike Ditka has died at 86, and the news hit Chicago hard on Friday.
The Hall of Fame tight end and former Bears head coach passed away, his family announced, and the city's sports community, hockey fans included, is feeling the loss.
Ditka was the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and he changed how the position was played.
He later coached the Bears from 1982 through 1992 and led them to the franchise's only Super Bowl title after the 1985 season, a team many still call one of the best defenses ever.

Why this reaches the hockey world

Chicago is a city where fans follow everything.
The same crowds that fill Soldier Field on Sundays pack the United Center for Blackhawks games, and Ditka was bigger than any single sport here.
He was part of how the city saw itself.
The timing stings. The Blackhawks played their home opener just three days ago, a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, and Patrick Kane's return to the United Center made it an emotional night for the whole building.
Fans were still riding that high when this news landed.

A legacy that crossed every sport

Known as Iron Mike and Da Coach, Ditka stayed visible long after his coaching days ended, and Chicago fans never stopped embracing him.
Jarrett Payton, son of Bears great Walter Payton, was the first to share the news publicly on Friday, and tributes have been pouring in ever since.
No cause of death has been revealed so far.
Whether you grew up cheering for the Bears, the Blackhawks or both, Chicago sports fans stand together today.
Ditka built that kind of loyalty in this city, and hockey fans are thinking of his family.
