Seth Jarvis sidelined until late October with right shoulder surgery isn't just bad news for Carolina, it's the exact break Bradly Nadeau needs.
While losing your lead goal scorer stings, it leaves a top-six void in the Hurricanes' opening night lineup.
Two top prospects are battling for that spot: Nadeau and Felix Unger Sorum.
Both earned consideration with AHL Chicago, but their contract situations create totally different pressure cookers.
The two prospects are on different clocks
Nadeau's three-year entry-level deal is winding down, meaning he becomes a restricted free agent next summer.
Every minute he logs on Carolina's power play during Jarvis' absence directly impacts his upcoming contract negotiation.
He has everything to gain, but just as much to lose if he stumbles.
Unger Sorum, on the other hand, is on a much cheaper clock.
Because his contract slid while playing in Sweden, Carolina keeps him locked in at $870,001 against the salary cap for two more seasons regardless.
Why the cheaper clock could win the spot
In a hard-cap world, that financial distinction matters.
But Rod Brind'Amour has never cared about contract timelines or sentimental narrative, he plays the guy who fits his system best.
If Nadeau wants the ice time, he has to out-work Unger Sorum, plain and simple.
A 15-game audition on a scoring line could completely set Nadeau's market value.
Or, it could leave him negotiating from a position of weakness if he can't convert.
Jarvis will return to reclaim his spot eventually.
The real question is whether Nadeau can make himself indispensable before that happens, or if Unger Sorum's cap-friendly reliability steals the show.
