Carolina brought Taylor Hall over from Chicago in exchange for a third-round draft pick and got
Mikko Rantanen in from Colorado.
The Avalanche got forwards
Jack Drury and
Martin Necas, the Hurricanes' second-round pick in 2025, and fourth-round selection in 2026.
Taylor Hall's value was likely less than a third-round pick
That is, despite his lowered trade stock, arguably below the value of a third-round pick, thanks to declining production and injury history, the Blackhawks got a third-rounder out of the deal.
Only because Colorado required a third team to get it done was that possible. Without that, the market value of Hall probably yields a far lesser return.
Hall's time in Chicago was largely unfruitful. The 33-year-old never really rounded back into form after starting the 2023-24 season on the injured list, missing most of the season due to surgery to repair a torn ACL.
He scored only twice in his first 20 games this season and, after a brief spurt with a hat trick against Dallas on Nov. 27, managed only four goals and 11 assists over the next 25.
Now with his seventh NHL team,
Hall has 721 points in 879 career games as he remains in the chase for playoff success.
He's a former first-overall pick who has yet to move beyond the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, further complicating an already complicated career narrative.
