The Mikko Rantanen trade shocked everyone in the NHL, and now Craig Berube has recognized what a huge pickup he will be for the Carolina Hurricanes, remembering him well from his time as Head Coach of the St. Louis Blues.
Nobody saw it coming, but now, Mikko Rantanen will be a Carolina Hurricane moving forward, and with the team chasing a Stanley Cup after a few years of falling short, this could be the move that changes everything.
We've heard from former teammates, the Avalanche GM and Rantanen himself, and now, other coaches around the league have weighed in.
One coach who has seen him a lot is former St. Louis Blues Head Coach Craig Berube, who is now behind the bench in Toronto, unsurprisingly, he's got the utmost respect for Rantanen and knows he could be a game-changer for Carolina.
«Well, he is a great player, I'll tell you that. I saw him a lot in Colorado when I was in St. Louis. He is one of the best players in the National Hockey League. Size, strength, scoring ability. A great shot - he has all the tools. It has helped their team.»
While the Maple Leafs aren't division rivals with Carolina, they may need to go through each other to get to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2025, and if that's the case, Rantanen could be one of the biggest and best players in what would be an incredible series.
The Jake Guentzel deal a year ago didn't get Carolina to the Eastern Conference Finals, but now they've brought in Rantanen and Taylor Hall, and given how everyone has spoken about the deal, it could be the move that gets this team over the hump.
