REPORT: TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS INTERESTED IN TRADING FOR A FORMER TOP-5 PICK
BY RYAN
They made a trade this week to try and fill the void left by their 'big 3 on D' by bringing in Conor Timmins from the Arizona Coyotes, but it sounds like they're not done yet!
Toughness and actual defence has been a problem in Toronto for awhile, and Sean O'Leary from The Score proposed that the Maple Leafs go after one of their own former defenceman.
In 2008 the Toronto Maple Leafs used their 5th overall pick on Canadian born and World Junior Gold Medal winner Luke Schenn. After 4 years with the organization, they traded him to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for James Van Riemsdyk.
Schenn isn't a 20-minutes-per-night kind of player, but he'd be relatively cheap to acquire and could ease the load of those ahead of him on the depth chart in Toronto, where he started his career in 2008. The Canucks are bound to be sellers after a disastrous start to the season, and Schenn is one of their most flippable assets. He won two Stanley Cups with the Lightning and has more experience than the majority of the Leafs' current crop of defensemen.»
Schenn may not provide the offensive numbers that players are excited to see, but he provides the defensive play and toughness that the Maple Leafs are definitely lacking. Not the mention he is a right handed shot.
