The Colorado Avalanche are living large right now as the best hockey team in the world, and rightfully so. They absolutely dominated the playoffs this year and knocked off the powerhouse two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in the process.
One of the big topics lately is Nathan MacKinnon
and his next contract, which is needed after next season. For the last few years, MacKinnon has been one of the most underpaid players in the league, making ''just'' $6,300,000. It's insane to think that this is underpaid, but when you see what players of his calibre are making around the league, MacKinnon should be getting double his current contract. Which ironically is exactly what he is apparently asking for.
It was reported last week, that on his next contract, he wants to become the highest paid player in the league. The highest currently is Connor McDavid
who takes $12,500,000, and MacKinnon is asking for over 13 according to reports.
But what is really upsetting fans is, back in 2019, MacKinnon told Jordan Horrobin of Forbes
«We have guys that we wouldn't (otherwise) be able to bring in,» MacKinnon said. «On my next deal, I'll take less again. Because I want to win with this group.»
So before winning the Stanley Cup, MacKinnon was talking about how he would take a cheaper deal to be able to keep his team intact but now 3 years later and after winning a cup, he wants to become the highest paid player in the league.
While we definitely believe MacKinnon is worth everything he will be given, he is arguably the second best forward in the NHL and deserves to be paid as such, it will just be difficult for fans to accept it after he publicly made that statement just a few years ago.
